Todd Blanche as U.S. Attorney General is a Dark Day for the Rule of Law

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following is a statement from Amb. Norm Eisen (ret.), co-founder and board member of Democracy Defenders Action, on today’s Senate vote to confirm Todd Blanche as the United States attorney general.
“The confirmation of Todd Blanche as United States attorney general is a dark day for the rule of law. Senate Republicans sounded the alarm, rightfully so, calling out the ‘fund that would pay people who beat police officers,’ and exposing a nominee who has never stopped serving the personal and political interests of Donald Trump. Yet, at the precipice, they lost their nerve and the majority voted for him anyway.
“Todd Blanche is demonstrably unfit. His tenure under Trump has been defined by reckless disregard for ethics, an abandonment of the Constitution and a total surrender of the independence the Department of Justice requires.
“He has treated Epstein victims with callous indifference, launched prosecutions against ordinary citizens, journalists, and the president’s political enemies for nothing more than disagreeing with his boss, and approved a collusive slush fund and sweeping tax immunity to Trump and his family. The attorney general has a responsibility to uphold the law and seek justice, not greenlight self-dealing and misconduct. By confirming Blanche, the Senate just installed a man whose sole qualification is that he has never said no to Donald Trump. The Senate vote today disrespects and undermines decades of impartial administration of justice and our democracy will be worse off for it.”
