GOP MEMBERS JOIN WITH DEMS TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND DEFEAT LAMONICA MCIVER CENSURE

Press Release | September 3, 2025

WASHINGTON, D. C. — The following is a statement by Amb. Norm Eisen (ret.), co-founder and board member of Democracy Defenders Action, regarding the failed U.S. House motion to censure Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) and remove her from the House Homeland Security Committee.

“While it’s too early for a wild celebration, another crack appeared in the wall of unchecked political power today: a sign that democratic principles may still hold some ground in this Congress. Together with the bipartisan demand for the Trump–Epstein files, the vote to table the undue censure of Rep. LaMonica McIver may be a sign that lawmakers are beginning to push back against the administration’s impunity and abuse of power. Let’s hope it’s not just a moment, but the beginning of a pattern.

“Today’s vote is a welcome affirmation of congressional independence. Rather than rushing to punish Rep. McIver before her case has been heard in court, members of Congress stood up for a basic principle: dissent and scrutiny of the executive are not grounds for political reprisal. By rejecting this partisan move, the House sent a clear message that targeting elected officials for raising legitimate concerns is an abuse of power. Our elected representatives must continue to defend the rule of law and speak out against the weaponization of government authority.”
